PREGNANCY

Melton Children’s Centres offer a variety of local services for parents.  Contact the centres for details of local breast-feeding groups, parent and toddler groups, and other services relating to pregnancy, maternity and child-care. 

This is the Leicestershire County Council website offering excellent information about Family Support for all issues from teenage pregnancy, sexual health clinics, counselling services, to supporting a family with a partner in prison. LOCAL MATERNITY SERVICES

St Mary's Hospital & Birth Centre.  The birthing centre provides care for healthy ‘low risk’ pregnant women and their families before, during and after birth. It is staffed by a University Hospitals of Leicester team of experienced and enthusiastic midwives and maternity care assistants. Leicester General Hospital Maternity Service. Midwives care for women who are ‘low risk’ in the community, while women who experience problems are seen within one of our range of specialist clinics at the hospital and a plan of care is developed.  Some babies born each year in Leicestershire may need our special care. PREGNANCY THROUGH RAPE

Pandora’s Project  Pregnancy, Child-birth and parenting as a Rape or Sexual Abuse survivor.  This site offers advice and insights into how it feels for pregnant women who have experienced early sexual abuse or sexual assault.   It offers good links to further relevant information including emotions brought on in victims by birth and breast-feeding. 

A Safe Passage is a website about coping with pregnancy, childbirth and raising children after sexual assault or abuse. It is sensitively aimed at victims and their supporting partners and family, offering sensitive, positive advice and useful links to more relevant information sites.

Care Confidential is a national service offering advice and support to those facing an unplanned pregnancy or post-abortion anxiety: Tel: 0300 4000999 to speak to an advisor.  Pregnancy and abortion counselling is available, as well as counselling after miscarriage and stillbirth. BREAST FEEDING SUPPORT

Breast Feeding Network   This link takes you to the Breast Feeding Network (BFN) site and help line for direct phone support. Speak to another mum, at the other end of the telephone, who has experience of breastfeeding and is able to offer information and support. This is recognised by the Department of Health who provide funding for the National Breastfeeding Helpline. Tel: 0300 100 0212

TEENAGE PARENTING

POST-NATAL DEPRESSION (pnd)

If you are feeling low after the birth of your baby, talk to your midwife or Health Visitor. They should visit you at home for a ‘new birth visit’ when your baby is between 10 and 16 days old.  They will be able to offer you advice and support.  Some of the health visitor support is run through the local children’s centres where professionals and other parents can support you in clinics, drop-ins and activity sessions for parents of children aged 0-5yrs.

Depression after childbirth is not uncommon and can be treated with local medical and professional help.  You can also seek help from your GP.  See the Could Counselling Help You section for more details.

The Association For Post-natal Illness (APNI) Trained staff will do everything that they can to help you and they will be able to offer you information and reassurance. They understand that most women affected with post-natal depression feel isolated in their suffering and they do want to assure you that they hear from more than 9,000 women every year who are suffering similarly. BEREAVEMENT THROUGH LOSS OF A BABY, STILL BIRTH, MISCARRIAGE

 Stephens Footprints is a baby loss support group set up for anyone in and around Melton Mowbray, affected by the loss of a baby by pregnancy loss, stillbirth and neonatal death.The group get together informally and share their experiences with others who have experienced the same loss. Meeting are at The Samworth Centre Coffee Lounge, Melton Mowbray, every other Monday, 10am-12pm  and also the on second Tuesday of every month at 7pm-8.30pm.

Leicester Sands is a voluntary group of parents who have all experienced the death of a baby either during pregnancy or soon after birth. They offer support, understanding, comfort and most importantly, a listening ear. We are able to offer telephone support or you are very welcome to come to our support meetings. Our support meetings are very informal and held in a relaxed atmosphere. Telephone: 07721068464

TAMBA Bereavement Support – (Twins and multiple birth) offer support for parents who have lost babies in a multiple birth situation through contact with a parent who has experienced a similar loss. Tel: 0800 1380509.
