Focussing on the things you like and love about your own body, hair, face, shape, abilities and preferences is positive and builds self-esteem.  However, some people concentrate on the things they do not like about themselves, never feeling worthy, lovable, competent or adequate in comparison to those around them or in the media. This negative thinking is called ‘low self-esteem’. Low self-esteem can prevent a young person from socialising and developing relationships with friends, meeting new people or even trying new things.  Changing the way we see ourselves can be really hard to overcome without understanding and encouragement from people around us and sometimes some help from people who have experienced similar issues. 

Sometimes there may be an issue or problem in life such as divorcing parents, break-up with a partner, bullying, or any other problem which impacts negatively on the way a person may see them-selves That’s why it is good to read about how others have dealt with low self-esteem, and talk about it.  Some of the links below can help you do that.


CHILDLINE offers advice and information to young people up to the age of 19.  This link talks about building CONFIDENCE & SELF-ESTEEM, why it may be low, and what to do about it. Help line: 0800 11 11.

The Kidshealth website offers teenagers with an image problem specific information that can help with issues such as poor body image, eating habits, sexual health and more and aims to help build self-esteem. With tips on everything from exercise, healthy pack-lunches, weight loss to dealing with anxiety, depression and family relationships.  This is a really excellent source of simple, factual information.

The Site has great tips and information for young people (16-24) about building what low self – esteem and how build a positive self-image.  With short films and related articles, THE SITE offers easy access to self-help. 

B-eat is a campaign to help young people and adults beat eating disorders. This site offers  leaflets and booklets for all ages and both men and women suffering from an eating disorder.  Support is also offered through a Youth Line. Tel: 0845 643 7650.


The Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Centre .for Leicestershire and Rutland offers advice and support, to anyone questioning their sexuality or gender identity, aged 13 – 19. A youth club facility for 13-19 year olds  is open at the centre in Leicester on Thursdays 7-9pm. Tel: 0116 255 0667.
